Homemade Whole Grain Chicken Feed... Updated and Now Corn-Free!

Since I started feeding my chickens a whole grain diet in December 2011 (when they were still pullets), they've been as happy and healthy as ever. All three ladies are in peak egg production: My Barred Rock lays 6 to 7 eggs per week.

I've been getting a lot of emails lately about one of my most popular posts, Garden Betty's Homemade Whole Grain Chicken Feed . Since I started feeding my chickens a whole grain diet in December 2011 (when they were still pullets), they've been as happy and healthy as ever. All three ladies are in peak egg production: My Barred Rock lays 6 to 7 eggs per week, my Easter Egger lays 5 to 6 eggs per week, and my Cochin lays 3 to 4 eggs per week. Their feathers are soft and glossy, their wings strong and quick, their combs and wattles meaty and well-formed. They are also the most active, affectionate and sociable chickens, behaving just like my dogs. I love their little personalities!

The Drug Docs: State's top foster care prescribers fueling medication of vulnerable kids

For years, few questioned how doctors treated the emotional trauma of California's abused and neglected children - and nobody monitored how often they handed out psychiatric drugs that can turn fragile childhoods into battles with obesity...

Now, a Bay Area News Group investigation into the prescribing habits of the state's foster care doctors reveals for the first time how a fraction of those physicians has been fueling the medicating of California's most vulnerable kids. A mere 10 percent of the state's highest prescribers were responsible about 50 percent of the time when a foster child received an antipsychotic, the riskiest class of what are known as psychotropic drugs - with some of the most harmful side effects.

Fish Die-Off In Ponds

During this time of the year, the temperature changes create a challenge to fish populations living in ponds in our county. As a general rule, small ponds intensively managed for catfish are the most susceptible to die-off problems.

How do you determine the cause of a fish die-off? In most cases, asking the right questions will lead you to the cause or causes. A recent publication from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Wildlife Specialists enlists useful information needed to determine the cause of fish die off...

Prepping: Going It Alone: Will the Lone Wolf Approach Work for You?

Some Preppers like to think or even fantasize about going it alone when the world collapses. They may envision a cabin hundreds of miles from civilization with enough provisions to sustain them for years.

Most people realize that other humans can be a threat during any crisis. However, not everyone will be a threat. Even today, in the absence of a crisis humans cause most of the problems in the world. While some people will be a threat, many more will be a burden because they failed to prepare. Then a smaller percentage will become saviors because of their knowledge, skills and their willingness to share what they know with others.

It's the season to go camping in the Mother Lode

It's the season to beat the heat and head to the high country. With the allure of cool mountain streams and breezes, hikes through the high country, the taste of food that only comes from cooking it on a grill outdoors.

Taking the much-needed break that a trip to the campground offers does take a bit of planning, especially since camping requires everything to be packed in and out and the fact that you and your family won't have access to modern conveniences. But that's the point of a camping trip, right?

Tackling tree mortality; State officials say Tuolumne County is leading the way with pilot project to remove dead and dying trees in beetle-ravaged Highway 108 neighborhood

Jacee Vallelunga, 7, stood with her friend, Mary McCrory, 6, outside her family's Leisure Pines home Thursday morning watching as a hazard-tree specialist across the narrow street was hoisted 100 feet in the air by a 200-ton crane.

Vallelunga's mother, Melissa, was standing next to the girls using her cell phone to film the scene as the specialist fired up his chainsaw and began cutting into the trunk of a 120-foot-tall pine tree that's brown hue stood out from the green ones around it. The pine was one of more than 750 that have died in the Leisure Pines neighborhood off Highway 108, east of Twain Harte. At least 29 million trees are believed to be dead throughout the Sierra Nevada, a result of a bark beetle epidemic made worse by four consecutive years of drought.

Homeschooling is VERY MUCH LEGAL in California, Despite Internet Rumors...

I began fielding questions about the legality of homeschooling in California early last week. At first, I did not think much of it because it was just one high profile Canary Party vaccine activist from another state that had heard a rumor.

It was in regards to an assembly bill that was rumored to be recently resurrected here in California. I promptly looked up that assembly bill and found that it ended up being a bill from last year's legislative session that was about funding for charter schools.

9,000 Dying Trees To Be Removed In Tuolumne County

Tuolumne County will start on the job of removing 9,000 dead and dying trees that threaten roads, water supplies, and infrastructure this month. The state will pick up most of the cost but there's no help for private homeowners.

Tree removal contractors in Tuolumne County are getting ready to cut and haul away timber that didn't survive the drought. Under an executive order from Governor Jerry Brown, the state will pay 75 percent of the $9 million cost of removal from public land.
