Exciting news! A bill to label food that contains Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) was just introduced in the California legislature. A simpler, cleaner version of Proposition 37, this bill is intended to ensure we know what’s in our food and how it’s grown.
If you support GMO labeling, now is a great time to contact your State Senator today and urge them to support SB 1381. With a strong majority of Californians in favor of GMO labeling, it’s time for lawmakers to step up!
I was disappointed to see that animals eating genetically modified organisms are exempt once again. Many people still don’t realize that GMO’s are fed to animals.
The bill, if passed, would require GE food to be labeled as genetically engineered, but food containing only some GE ingredients could be labeled “Produced with Genetic Engineering” or “Partially Produced with Genetic Engineering.” The bill prohibits punishment for failure to label GE foods if less than 1 percent of the ingredients in packaged food is genetically engineered or if the producer didn’t know they were using – or didn’t intend to use – GE foods.
