Brother can you spare a dime?
Did you happen to read the shocking news posted to My Motherlode today? Local owner and publisher Tim McCaffrey announced that the Sierra Mountain Times has been hammered so hard by the failing economy that they have decided to close up shop.
The truth is the SMT was hit with a double whammy, it wasn’t just the economy that weighed down the weekly paper. Dwelling on the past won’t fix a thing. Now, I’ll admit, I don’t always have the time to read each issue, but I do keep an eye on their Facebook page (if you read this, Tim, please increase the font size on the SMT website, it’s way too small).
My husband and I are very proud of Tim and glad to call him a friend. Many other people have expressed the same warm feelings for Tim and the Sierra Mountain Times. I refuse to sit by and do nothing. We need a good local paper to bring us together as a community. I like knowing what’s happening in and beyond Twain Harte.
Sierra Mountain Times
When Shawn worked at the Twain Harte Times news office, I was always impressed with the number of volunteers who were constantly on hand to pick up whatever task needed accomplished. They pitched in just as quickly when we were getting the Sierra Mountain Times off the ground. There were dozens of people involved with the local paper, who will be adversely affected by the closing down of SMT.
I am publicly making a commitment to purchase a subscription to the Sierra Mountain Times and I’m asking you to do the same. Several people have already pledged their support. Would you be willing to pay, say… $49.95 a year, to keep our paper alive and kicking? It’s less than you would spend for one dinner at the Outlaws BBQ in downtown Sonora.
Newly elected Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown recently proclaimed that the so-called “stimulus package” hasn’t created a single job. SMT readers have the opportunity to work together and save 9 jobs and a local business, right here in Twain Harte. I’m going to call their office tomorrow to pledge my support. Won’t you please do the same?
