Expecting the Unexpected

Snow Again!

When I was a child growing up in the Great Lakes State, the weather was very unpredictable. Michiganders such as myself were fond of saying, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes, It’ll change,” and it was true. We never knew what kind of weather we would see during the day.

Michiganders grow up expecting the unexpected, the trouble is I do not live in Michigan any more but I am still learning to expect the unexpected.

I woke up early this morning to the sound of a hard pounding rain. We were way past “raining cats and dogs,” I think Lake Michigan opened up on us and poured out of the sky. I worked a little while and decided that I could use a nap and went back to bed. I’ve always enjoyed sleeping through a nice rain storm or even a thunderstorm.

Then around 9 or 10 a.m. it began to snow – hard, it was really coming down. I woke up to more snow on the ground. I cannot believe I am saying this, but we have at least three inches of snow on the ground. It snowed all the way down to East Sonora.

I feel a little like Alice in Wonderland. Each time I open the front door, I am never sure what I will find on the other side.

Skechers Shape Ups

The sky was really dark, overcast and heavy this morning. Now, the sun is shining, the sky is clear and everywhere you look, snow is falling off the trees in huge clumps. Don’t forget the sunglasses today. You will need them.

Normally, I am all for the snow but I have to say that I am a little discouraged today. We made a trip to Kohl’s on Saturday (I can’t wait until our new Kohl’s Department store finally opens.) and picked up a pair of Skechers Shape Ups and I am really looking forward to getting outside and walking more. I guess it won’t be today. I love my new shoes and I’m certainly now wearing them out in the rain and snow.

The Winter of 2010

Most of you will recall that spring officially began on March 20th. While the calendar might say spring — someone forgot to share that information with Mother Nature.

I am beginning to believe that the Winter of 2010, could well end up being remembered as the winter that wouldn’t end.

My husband was right on the money, when he predicted the snow would begin falling Sunday evening — it started coming down hard around 5:30 p.m. and continued to fall hard until around 8 p.m. or so. We had several inches of accumulation. I was fully expecting to wake up to a blanket of the white stuff covering the ground.

Not so. It was pouring rain this morning and continued to rain down buckets, until right about 2:00 p.m. today, when the snow started falling like there was no tomorrow. In fact, in the last half hour, we’ve had over an inch of snow fall and hasn’t shown any signs of letting up anytime soon.

I can’t help but laugh. We thought we were being so clever timing our pellet usage for our pellet stove, so that it would run out in perfect time for warmer weather and we wouldn’t have any bags laying around all summer. That didn’t work out so well for us, we ended up driving into town last night to pick up a few more bags. We are expecting snow all week long.

I think this winter could run right through until fall if this keeps up, then start all over again. So much for global warming, we don’t have any signs of it here in the Motherlode. The snow plow just ran through…again. I’ll try to snap up a few pictures for the site.

I just love the snow! It doesn’t show, does it?

Will it really snow?

More snow has been predicted for the Motherlode area. According to most reports we can expect snow down to 3,000 feet. When the snow will fall and for how long, is still up in the air.

I can’t say for sure where everyone is getting their news but Weather Bug is predicting snow all week long. One person I spoke with expects the snow to begin to fall at 10:00 a.m.

My father-in-law assures me that it’s going to start snowing any minute now (at 9:30 p.m., when I spoke with him) and it is expected to snow all night long and into tomorrow. Of course, he does live in Sugar Pine and it could well be snowing there. I’m not about to call at this time of the morning to find out.

My husband says it won’t start snowing until late tomorrow evening but that we could end up just getting an inch of rain.

It will be interesting to see if we do get another snowstorm this late in the season. Does anyone else find it curious that it almost always snows on the weekend? My husband has a theory about that. He believes it has to do with traffic patterns. I think it’s something much more sinister, like a government conspiracy or payoff, for our senators who enjoy spending their weekends on the slopes.

You just never know. I wouldn’t put anything past this bunch of corrupt legislators. I wouldn’t trust any of them to walk my dog.
